Perhaps the gym could setup an outdoor climbing group? Or an outing? Lead by people with alot of experience.

that would be awsome. have a signup once a month for some ice climbing or rope climbing or whatever depending on the season.

you could make the program only available to gym members. that way people won't be discouraged from getting day passes in order to join an outing. it would also broaden the climbing opportunities for gym members

Hmmm interesting. You have a good point there devil. I think I'll move a copy of this post to the suggestions/feedback section

I've seen many people forming groups at the gym that end up going out to climb together outside. There even used to be a couple of staff members who started their own business taking people out to show them the ropes but their insurance was so high that in the end it wasn't worth it (I think). It is deffinately awkward to get through the beginner stage as an outdoor climber unless you have an experienced climber to learn from.

Join the ACC (Alpine Club of Canada) Ottawa branch. They run intro classes, take newbies out on climbing trips, etc.

Climb with as many different people at the gym as you can. You'll likely find out who are the outdoor climbers pretty quick. Be good company (ie don't be a schmuck, besides that's my job Smile), and there's a good chance you'll get invited to climb outside at some point. If you want to get in to roped climbing outdoors, you should transition into some roped climbing indoors at least some of the time. Taking a lead course will give you some more skills to practice. There are some books that help give you an idea of the skills that you should have for climbing outside as well (climbing anchors by John Long comes to mind). Oh, and most importantly, offer to buy the post climbing beer Wink
